I love a simple hash for supper. For hubbies, it doesn't get any better than meat and potatoes, and for kids- well- it doesn't get any better than something you can eat ketchup with! :)
1 1/2 lbs ground beef
1 large onion, chopped
6 medium sized potatoes, diced
1/3 cup water
salt and pepper
Crumble ground beef in large pot. Cook until most of your meat has browned and you have grease in the bottom of the pot. Toss in potatoes and onions. Stir and add water, salt, and pepper.
Cover and allow to cook for 12 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
*You don't really want to use an extra lean meat with this because you need the fat to cook and flavor the potatoes.
*Served here with green peas and slaw.
****We sometimes use other meats in this dish. Leftover pork and ham is cheap and yummy!

Woohoo we can have this!! I'm putting it on the menu for this weekend! My children love ketchup too! My meat however is very lean should I add some fat? If so what would you reccomend?

Lard or just a little extra water might would be fine. ...If you have bacon grease- yummmm-O!
ReplyDeleteWe call this Harper Hash (its been a family recipe for over 80+ years). I use lean beef and just add more water and I also do 1 pound beef and 8 potatoes, my cooking time is also much longer. I like it with a little butter.
ReplyDeleteSounds great established1981!..and your way is a little more frugal- upping the potatoes and cutting back on the beef :)
ReplyDeleteThat looks really good! I love simple meals. :)
ReplyDeleteLooks really great, can't wait to try it.
ReplyDeleteThank you Mrs. Mordecai and Lindy!
ReplyDeleteHope you ladies try and like it :)
I made this a couple of nights ago. We really enjoyed it, and I will be making it again. It is definite comfort food, and cheap, er frugal, to boot!
ReplyDeleteSo glad to hear that! Thank you nonnahsMama :)
ReplyDeleteI made this tonight (I just found your blog a month ago). So delicious. Thank you!
ReplyDelete*I have seen many hash recipes on the web, but they seemed to involved or commenters said they were bland.for my first hash recipe, I am glad this didn't disappoint.
