Kellan and Kyler are not sure the plan will work
Time for deployment!
It's now or never boys!

SAIL!
"Living the dream!"- Krestan
"I got this!"- Krestan, again
And this, my friends, is how you know your little boy, is ready for ship life!

Rom 8:28  And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
Acts 27:24 ... God hath given thee all them that sail with thee.

Got it!- PROOF they're feeding the dogs at the table:

...although I'm shocked at the hows..........
...and wondering if they've watched too much Lady and the Tramp......
Do you see the "I love you" in the dog's eyes?
She's totally smitten.....on anyone who'll feed her spaghetti.
Sigh.

The Extras...

Sunday was Mother's Day and it just seems that day could not slip by without a 'cute' comment from a kiddie!

My 11 year old was chatting away and then told me that his brother told him that sissy would have had a twin.
I said, "Yes, you already know that story."

(You gotta know this kid-- he was talking long before he could form words! He'll bring up the rocks in the driveway just to have something to talk about! )

He then said that his brother also told him that I had miscarried another baby before the oldest of his brothers were born. Again I said, "Yes now, you know all about these stories."

He thought for a minute and then added; "Well, just how many EXTRAS would we have around here if you had, had all those babies?"

I laughed until tears were dripping!
Extras?!?!?!

To Be Picky or Not to Be Picky: that is not optional

Warning: this post is not for the faint hearted mother!

It will sound a little tough, but if you are a young mother, it may give you some hope as you 'train up your child in the way they should eat'!

When I had one child, I could let him be a little picky, if he wanted. I could afford a little waste at that time and I really didn't consider eating 'healthy' and frugally', as much as I do now. I must admit that I was young and very naive. :-)

But now that there are 6, five being boys and all six of them eating far more than I ever dreamed....health and frugality and developing character, have become part of their training.

Part of the training started when I learned a couple of verses from the Bible.
1 Cor 10:27 ..... whatsoever is set before you, eat....
Phil 2:14 Do all things without murmurings and disputings:
I told them that this meant "grumbling and complaining".

It was very important to me, and still is (and still is a teaching process ;), that they learn to eat what was put before them without grumbling and complaining. If you read the context of the verse from Corinthians it will fit into the following little story.

My missionary friend told me about visiting a family in the country she was living in. She said she was the "guest of honor" so to speak, and that meant that she got the goat head. Yes, the whole head. She said if she had not ate it, it would have offended the people very much and she would not have had a chance to tell them about the Lord.

I don't know what the Lord will do with my children, but I have high hopes. And, if they are ever on the mission field and are served a goat head, I want them to eat it, so they can tell them about Jesus! :-)

There are times I offer really weird (to our family) foods and allow them the choice of trying it, but if its fixed at meal time and put on their plate, its theirs to eat! :-)

I also sometimes give them the opportunity to tell me what they like and don't like. I know some of them do NOT like fresh tomatoes, yet, they are still served fresh tomatoes. I do give mercy, and give those who like them more and those who don't less, but nonetheless, if its on their plate, they must eat it. :-)

Another important reason that I do this, is because their pediatrician told me when they were little, to keep offering a food, even if they did not like it. He said if it is offered repeatedly over a 6 month period of time, they will begin to "acquire a taste for it". I have found this to be true in most cases. My oldest recently shocked some relatives when he dove for brussel sprouts when they took him out to a food bar!

Another very tough point, that I realize may not fit into some of your parenting styles, and if so, I ask that no one be offended, but just consider the following.

When your children were little, it was natural to them to soil their diaper, but you taught them not to. It was natural for them to sneeze and cough and not cover their mouth, but you taught them to do so. It seemed natural for them to burp whenever they felt the urge or to make other naughty noises, but you taught them that these things were not proper and appropriate in the company of others. ....Right? Well, as tough as this may sound, when they are little, you can likewise teach them not to gag on their food. You don't have to be mean or unkind at all. (I also know that a few children may have health reasons that may make this impossible for some....so please take no offense.)

I watched a friend of mine, whose children were older than mine teach her children in this manner; if they started to spit out their food or gag, she would say in a kind voice, "no no, don't do that, you could choke'' or "don't spit your food out, that's not proper in front of people". She also babysat a lot of children through the years and she said she had taught all of them the same thing. She added that one little fellow never did gag at her house but several times when she had been to his house, he had complained about food and when his mother told him that he had to eat it, he began to gag and she let him down from the table. :-)

I watched her, and used a similar approach with my children and was delightfully surprised that it worked! But I will say, if I had waited until they were older, I am not so sure that I could have gotten the behavior under as much control. Also, I have read of some children rejecting food and it turned out that they were allergic to that food, so those things must be considered and I also understand that this may not bother some mothers at all. This post is ONLY my opinion and MY personal experience, it is non-judgmental.

That said, my children are older now and it is always understood that God gave us our food and we are to eat what's put before us with thanksgiving.

Are they always perfect about their food and sweet spirited? No- but neither am I. :-)
We are all mere humans, and though we strive to be our best, we sometimes fall short.
But the idea is; training. Training means a process and that is what I am doing in our home.

I couldn't fix 8 different things, nor can I afford expensive fun foods for every meal, and they have seen firsthand, the benefits of eating more healthy food(they go long periods without being sick and they often recuperate quickly). I've also made them aware of our food budget and that we must stay within that budget and that means eating frugal foods that aren't every one's favorite all the time.(Thankful they all LOVE beans!) Some meals everyone likes, others are hit and miss. I try to fix things that I know are tolerable for all of them. But that toleration has been a process of feeding them varieties as the Lord provided, trying to fix them in ways that appeal to them the most, offering them repeatedly, and making sure that even during times that is was new and maybe they didn't like it yet, they still had to eat a spoon of it ;-)

My last point on this was considering how my children might act, as children, at another person's home when they were offered food. I want them to be grateful for anything that they are given. Someone had to work and earn money for that food, that is no small matter, and I would not want them to not be thankful for some one's willingness to share their food with them.

Again, this post is non-judgmental. I only wanted to share this perspective and approach, from a FRUGAL point of view....simply as food for thought! ;-)

Ok- WHY is there an army guy in the sink?

This Gratituesday, I'm grateful for: army guys in the sink!
This past weekend, my younger three children became quiet, so I stepped out of my dwelling (the kitchen) to see what they were up to. There they sat, so cute, on the couch whispering and giggling low and curled up with their notebooks! (Not enough school work guys?)
I wondered about the whispering and giggling but its not uncommon for them to sit and write stories and cut up about them.
I walked to the bathroom to find this:
Yeah, an army guy. Not that they are uncommon here, just that they are normally in the toy-box and not the bathroom sink, ya know?
"Ok, kids, WHY is the army guy in the sink?"
"Oh, we forgot about him."
"You forgot him? Well, why was he there in the first place?"
"Well, he got a little wet." (laughing)
"A little we huh? What- were you guys trying to baptize him or something?" (I question, thinking I'm the creative cute one.)
"Well, as a matter of fact...Joe the preacher (another army guy, uhmm chaplain?), was the preacher and Harvey (this army guy) wasn't saved...he had been out drinking root beer, and Joe went after him and told him he had to get saved and get baptized so he dunked him in the sink. Then he decided he wanted to swim around for a little while."
"Ohhhhh, ooookaaaayyyy."
******
Kids have a way of making you SO thankful for army guys in the sink, don't they?
...the story went on but I'm afraid the rest mandates the patience that only their own mother has ears for ;-).... like how Harvey can now smell sin!
-Too funny!-

Leading Children to the Lord...

Using the Truth and the Word of God is really all you need, but if you are like me and want something put together on a child's level, something to read at bedtime in small easy lessons, or perhaps are like I have been in that, you may not have been raised in church and really don't know how to deal with this issue with your children- then this book will bless your home! And- its good for all ages!

My 7 yr old and me got to be alone on a ride home tonight, very rare since he has FIVE siblings... but, he began to tell me that he didn't remember if he was saved. He remembered a night when he asked me to pray with him about something privately but he couldn't remember what the prayer was about. Well, I remembered, but he's the one that I needed to KNOW remembered! So- I talked a while to him about being saved, praying again, even pulling over right now, and about what happens to those who don't pray.

But- how this ties to the above book-
I've been reading it again at night (for the umpteenth dozenth time) to the kids. They use Scripture in this book, but I'm thinking there must have been some serious prayer and fasting by those who put this book together, because EVERY SINGLE TIME I've read this book to my children, at least one of them has been stirred, spiritually.

Now, I'm not just tryin' to sell you something. If I had money, I would buy all of these that I could find and GIVE THEM AWAY! - But, I just wanted to share it with you. Its been in our home for years and I can't even remember where it came from- but God has used it, over and over, to stir my children towards knowing Him personally as their Lord and Savior.

3 John 1:4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.

Funny stuff at my house....

Ok, first you all know that there are half a dozen kids here, right?
K!
And you know that 5 of them are boys too? Yeah...
Well, the 12 year old was in the shower last night and he had forgotten his underwear. So you know what he did? He started sending out text messages for someone to get his underwear for him! Oh what a laugh we had over this!

Gratituesday..seeing fruits of growth

For Christmas, my oldest son was given a gift card for a certain area. He found what he needed from there but wanted to buy something special with what was left. He even made a few phone calls about what and where and how to do this.
Well, the very special part was that HIS extra $ on his card was spent on ME! (sniff, sniff)
The gift was great! It was so perfect and so me! BUT...the best part was seeing this child be so selfless! He could have spent the rest on himself! There's ALWAYS more STUFF to buy!
But nope, he used it to give me a little gift!
I was so thankful to see such generosity as I see my not-so-little boy...growing up! (sniff, sniff, waAAAhhhh:-)

What did she say?

My husband and I were standing in the kitchen the other day and our little girl walked in talking...and talking...and okay, you get the point, right? Well, she was going on about something being "miss-tiss-eee-us". I looked at my husband with a puzzled expression, I'm sure, and he said, "mysterious". I was shocked to see him understand 'kid talk' better than me! 'magine that?!?

GRATITUESDAY!-

I''m so grateful, for soooo much, this GRATITUESDAY!
Please let me share one precious little treasure!
Some of you may have noticed that I wasn't around much during the month of December? Well, there were many , many reasons and I as promised...I'm gonna tell ya more about 'why'!

Well, for starters, you guys know I was busy with half a dozen kiddie winkies, right?
And I told ya about the infection, right?
K, well.....do you guys remember my story about our Poodle, Captain?
Well, the little guy kept developing more and more -uuhhhhh...behavior issues.
We tried all of that nicey-nice pet behavior-management stuff and still he remained unpredictable.

Now, before I go on, let me just say that I have never been one of those kind of people.
You know, the ones who would throw their kids out for their pets? Or perhaps not that extreme, but the kind that would do weird stuff like chew food up and feed it to their little poopsey-woopsey?
Well, anyway, just for the record: I HAVE NEVER BEEN ONE OF THOSE!
:-)
So, having said all of that... I must add that I'm also not one of those who just think people with pets are completely insane. I think and hope that I am moderate and 'normal'. :-)
-and not without natural affections while regarding the life of my beast as per Scripture-Rom 1:31, 2 Tim 3:3,Prov 12:10
Now that you know me a little better...... I'll now get on to the rest of the story like Paul Harvey! (Did you hear his voice in your head? Yeah, I did too!)
So- back to Captain and his issues.
We made the tough decision to re-home Captain. We were so perplexed about it because of our little girl (remember the one who wanted him because she's "the only girl and doesn't have a sister"?). Despite the aggravation that this little creature was causing the rest of us (growling at the boys and snapping at them at times), and the fact that she couldn't even pet the little grumpy guy anymore...she still loved him! But the final decision was made after the 3rd professional warning. (The vet warned us (to get him away from the kids) and 2 groomers; one groomer that he tried to bite and another that he did bite -mm-hmm and yes, he drew blood.)
...and I want you to know that after he made it to his new home, with an older, single lady....he turned into an apparent angel! 'magine that? Maybe he found someone who would chew his food up?!?!

You guys know what happened for the next 3 nights straight, don't you? YES, tears, tears, and more tears from the eyes of our dear little daughter. She even wrote little heart-wrenching notes to me and DH with these words : "Can you please, please go get Cap-um back? I miss him real bad. Oh sob! Oh cry!"
So while my husband was thinking of ways to go get that critter back, I was wishing that I had waited to teach her to write!
But, in this one, I had to be the strong one and say "We are NOT getting that dog back! He's not happy here, he's happy there, and if he were to hurt someone here- it would be real bad." (Daddies! they just melt don't they?;-)
Yeah they do.....listen....
DH said, what on earth can we do to stop her hurt? And me being the all-knowing, investigating, searching and seeking, wife and mom that I am said, "Get her another one." :-)
...I went on to share what I had learned about different breeds, which was better with children, which didn't shed, prices and places to buy, proper training starting from puppy-hood, and where we could find one right away! :-)

So....we are now the proud family/owners of a sweet little puppy named Penny.
She became our "December Christmas Family Project"!
The kids and I worked very hard coming up with items to post on ebay to help raise funds to buy her. I got elected with the special job of caring for her during the night, which was like a new baby for the first couple of weeks. We have also began lots of behavior management training with her to hopefully avoid any form of problems with her in the future.

She already has been able to learn and respond to more commands/tricks and training than we were able to accomplish with our other dog, yet we don't have to chew her food up!
Would you like to meet her?

Here is our little sweet heart:PENNY!

AIN'T SHE CUTE?

And now my little girl writes notes about "making your dog happy" but I don't know if she's wrote one that said "thank you"...hmm. But she has helped me during the late night hours with little Penny and it has been a very precious thing to watch her be so doting and loving towards this little pup and to have the little pup give that love back to everyone in our home. She has truly brought a sweet and joyful spirit to our home! An answer to prayer!

Kids are the best....

The other day, my little girl asked me for some kefir. I normally put it in their smoothies so it was odd for her to ask for it like this. I let her have it and she LOVED it! She then asked for more, drank it all, licked her lips, and asked, "Did you make that?" I shook my head yes and she then brought me a piece of paper and asked, "Can I have your autograph?" ;-)

I signed 'Mom' on her paper, she then said "your real name" and I had to stop and think....isn't Mom my real name?
