We all get 'in a pinch' from time to time if we're on a budget.
Here's a sample of what Works For Me(with a family of 8):
For Breakfast:
Oatmeal- whole rolled oats $1.90 for a barrel with 30 servings.
2 gallons of milk- $6.80
For lunch and suppers:
2-3lb bags of onions- $2 (IGA)
1 very large pack of ground beef (5 to 6 lbs) $10 at Walmart
carrots- $1
2 boxes pasta $1.50

pinto beans- $2
turkey ham- $2.50
2 cans sp. sauce- $1.80
potatoes- $5
2 cans tomatoes- $1
cornmeal-$2
eggs $1.25
For lunch:
split pea soup with cornbread
pinto beans and cornbread
chili cheese baked potatoes
turkey, ham, potatoes, and onion skillet dish

For supper:
spaghetti

This list would get our family of 8 through a week and a family of 4 through 2.
It's frugal and it's simple and it Works for Me!
