(Felted) Wool Mittens

These were made from a large piece of purple wool that was given to me. They could made from sweaters, jackets, etc bought at thrift stores or yard sales. There's all sorts of fun things you can do with wool. I have a book here from the library where they have fuzzed it/frayed it (not sure the exact word they use, some on the net call it 'felting') but once it's all frizzy, they wet it with a slightly soapy water, then mold it. One image in this book they do a booty on someone's foot. Once they've made the entire thing, they pull it off and allow it to to dry and it holds it's shape. Quite unique!
My kids mostly have knitted gloves right now, which is made like a sweater. They get wet instantly in the snow. I'm hoping these will help prolong their play over those knitted gloves, by keeping them dry a little longer since they're not supposed to be very absorbent! ;-)

Homemade Puppet Theater-

Attention: Mom's Frugal now on Youtube
 www.youtube.com/momsfrugal

My kiddies are going to LOVE this!

I was able to have Lowe's hold me a box, for free. It's a HUGE refrigerator box and I cut a cute little door in the back.
The fabric had been given to me years ago by my neighbor. I purchased some border paste to glue down the striped fabric for about $4.  Other than that- FREE!
I used yarn to string up all the curtains by poking holes in the side and tying.
I bought this set of puppets with my Swagbucks, although they were at a cheaper price. (I'm guessing the price is up right now so they can give quick shipping.)

Denim Quilt

Here's a little something that I've been up to lately.....

This is my oldest son's Christmas present this year. I don't think he sneaks peeks here so I can show you :-)
His little sister cut the "K" out for the center and also designed the pattern of the squares. The denim is various shades, the back is white, and it's tied with red yarn.  On the back of a corner is a patch with his initials, the year, and "Mom". I bordered the top with the white back to finish it.
I have a few more little things for him but I can't show you because of the little snoops that are getting something just like those. They are homemade items as well and I hope to get up some sneak peeks at those next week when they are playing....instead of snooping ;-)

15 Bean Soup

This soup is is so hearty, but it's not just your average 15 Bean Soup! I have a secret ingredient that kicks it way up! It's something most people usually throw out but it adds SO much flavor to this soup...and others.

-3/4 cup barley
-1 pkg 15 bean mix- throw out the flavor pack, you won't need it!
-1 large onion, chopped
-2 stalks of celery, chopped
-2 bay leaves
-1/4 t rosemary
-several twists of fresh ground black pepper
-water
-12 to 16 oz sliced polish sausage (optional)
-2 cups of leftover ham broth*

(*The ham broth is the secret! When you cook hams for the holidays, ALWAYS keep your broth!)

Cover and soak your beans and barley overnight in water with 2 T lemon juice. Drain, rinse, and drain again.
Dump them in large soup pot with 4 quarts of water, 2 cups ham broth, onions, celery, pepper, bay leaves, and any other seasonings that you might like.(The liquid will cook down.) Simmer, covered, for approx. 2 hours and add sliced polish sausage if desired and simmer another 30 minutes or so, until beans are tender.

Rice Babies- bed warmers

I made these for Christmas, like I did our Bean Babies four years ago.
I used a pattern like a gingerbread man, cut them out on plain fabric, double stitched the edges so no rice grains can escape, turned them, filled with rice, stitched the turning and filling hole, and wrapped.
The kids are able to color them however they wish and at bedtime, they can be heated for 1 1/2 minutes in the microwave for a cozy bed warmer!
Dh liked this idea so much that he requested one long rice bag for his neck and two small ones for his pockets so when he goes outside to check on the dogs through the winter, he can keep warm too! ;-)

Just in case you don't go to MoneySavingMom often, Brandy has a new guest post there that fits in with her guest post here several years ago; Christmas On A Zero Budget. The new post on MSM is called; Celebrating a Memorable Christmas On A Zero-Dollar Budget.
Be sure to look closely at her pictures to see more of her talent and creativity!

GUEST POST: Christmas On A Zero-Budget

Wednesday, November 4, 2009

Brandy, The Prudent Homemaker, has put together this special post! I think all of us will find it very helpful and encouraging, as we seek to make Christmas a special time for our families.

CHRISTMAS ON A ZERO-BUDGET:
What do you do when you have no money to spend on Christmas gifts? What if your budget is small, but you'd still like to give more? What can you do to still have gifts under the tree? Here are some ideas for an enjoyable Christmas without spending a dime.

CHRISTMAS CARDS
Rather than spending the money to mail Christmas cards, send an email Christmas card instead. You can send a Christmas letter or a regular card-style Christmas greeting.
If you want to include a family photo in your card, or just have a family picture to hang on your wall or give as a gift (to grandparents, etc), set up an at-home studio.
Create a backdrop by using a solid colored sheet or blanket (or even curtains!) hung from a curtain rod, a broomstick, or, at my house, leftover electrical conduit. You can use safety pins to hang the sheet from this. Hang your backdrop between a ladder and another high object (I used a ladder with a box of diapers on top, and a piano with a box of diapers on top.)

Arrange for seating for your family in front of the backdrop. We used a piano bench before, and we have also used a chair for individual photos.

Dress in your Sunday clothes for a more formal picture, or whatever outfits you want for your portrait.

Set up your camera on a tripod and take a few test photos ahead of time. Use your camera remote to take pictures, or ask a friend to come by and take them for you. Take lots of pictures!

If inside doesn't appeal to you, take the photos outside! You'll have great natural light.

Crop your finished photo in the computer.
DECORATIONS
If you have a faux Christmas tree, it can be a great blessing at Christmas because you don't have to buy one. In some areas of this country, a tree can be $10. Where I've lived, a cut tree is always about $65-$120. Having a fake tree saves us money every year. If you don't already have a tree, but you have some paper, consider a paper tree taped on the wall (either butcher paper, painted green, pieced construction paper-whatever you have) and have your children help you make the ornaments to glue on it.

If you haven't been able to buy ornaments, consider homemade. Use popcorn, sew or crochet some ornaments, have your children make paper chains and paper ornaments. My grandfather carved baskets from walnut shells that we hang on our tree each year.

Cut some paper snowflakes to hang on the windows or on your tree.

Don't have a nativity, but would like to display one? Use this printable nativity to make one.

Use greenery from your own yard, whether it's evergreens and pine cones, boxwood, magnolia branches, to "spruce" up your home.

GIFTS
If you don't have money to spend, use what you have.
This might mean making over old clothing to fit your children. It may mean using the fabric (including scraps and old clothing) that you have on hand to make dolls, doll clothes, needed clothing, mittens, dress-up clothing, puppets, slippers, or a Bible cover. Click here for free printable sewing patterns and tutorials for all of the above and more.
If you want to give candy or food gifts, in your family's stockings, you can make your own! Make caramel popcorn, cookies, and candies from items on your pantry shelves. Wrap them beautifully and put them in stockings or under the tree.
What about your spouse? Perhaps there is a service that you can perform for your sweetheart. Is your husband needing some pants hemmed, or some shirts mended? Maybe there is a project around the house that you've been meaning to take care of, but haven't taken the time to do it. If you have the supplies already, take care of it for your gift.
GIVING TO FRIENDS
Consider homemade French Bread, cookies, breakfast muffins, or canned fruits and jams from your garden. Give herbs that you have dried from your garden or seeds you've collected.

What about charities? Do you want to give to others who are in need more than you are? If you're looking for ways to serve others without spending money, read here.

STOCKING STUFFERS
We tend to forget that traditionally, all of one's Christmas presents fit in one's OWN stocking. They weren't the big decorative stockings that we hang today; they were simply your own socks.
Today we tend to put most of our presents under the tree. So when you're wondering what to put in your family's stockings, don't feel like it has to be a lot of presents. It can be simple things.
Or, you can do things the old-fashioned way, and put all of the presents in the stockings!

Here are some other ideas for stockings:
-Printable paper dolls and paper toys
-A coloring book made from printable pictures found online.
-Bookmarks
-Handkerchiefs: I make these for my children and they really like them! I have used an old top sheet (after the bottom sheet wore through), as well as flannel, muslin, and broadcloth. My children like these with their initials embroidered into a corner.
-Hair ribbons and barrettes: Take the ribbons you've been saving and turn them into hair ribbons. Change simple old barrettes into something different using a few tutorials.
-Jewelry: Have any bits of broken jewelry? Using a pair of needle-nosed pliers, put those together into something new.
-Candy and cookies
-Nuts or raisins from your pantry (bought in bulk and then repackaged into smaller packages, tied with ribbon)
-apples and oranges
-Click here for printable paper dolls, 3-D toys, bookmarks, gift tags and boxes, and more frugal gift ideas.

LET OTHERS KNOW
If your needs are tight this year, its okay to let others know. This might mean having grandparents buy needed clothing for your child. It might mean that someone you know shares their hand-me-downs with you and you wrap some as gifts for your children. Last year, a friend gave us 4 outgrown scooters from her children, and we put them under the tree.

Perhaps you can do the same for another family this year, who may need baby or toddler toys and books that your children are no longer using.

If you sew, let others know. Many older women who don't sew anymore have quite a large amount of fabric. They may not be sewing anymore, but would love to bless someone else who COULD use that fabric. You may be able to make many gifts from this fabric. Perhaps your children need a warm blanket on their bed. A quilt made from other's leftover fabric can fill that need. A warm dress, pajamas, a fabric crown, etc. could all be under your tree this year. They will be under mine, thanks to several kind women who shared their fabric with me this year.

A Special Thanks to Brandy for taking the time to put this special post together. May the Lord use it to bless others.

Orange Date Muffins

2 1/2 cups whole wheat
1 T baking powder
1 t salt
2/3 cup cane sugar
1/2 cup chopped dates
2T melted butter or other fat
1 egg
1 1/2 cups milk
zest and juice of 1 orange

Mix dry ingredients. Toss in dates and zest, mix well.
Blend in wet ingredients. Stir just until moistened.
Bake at 375 for 20 minutes.

You may want a little more sugar in these, but I think dates are like candy and the more of them you use, the
less sugar that you will need!

More links for keeping it frugal during the holidays...

11/26/09
I saw these tips at Get Rich Slowly, for staying within the budget.

Here's a list of 50 ideas for keeping it frugal at Being Frugal.

I like this list of frugal activities during the holidays at FrugalNing.

I've mentioned The Dollar Stretcher to you before, but here's a link to some neat holiday ideas.

Here's another list of 50 at BibleMoneyMatters.

All Things Frugal has some neat links here.

I love the tree decorating ideas at Happy Frugal Christmas. She used candy that was wrapped in shiny paper, tied to the tree by silver curling ribbons. Very cute idea!

There's so many wonderful ideas out there!

But of course, my favorite frugal tips for Christmas are Brandy's!

Our Jesus Box:

The correct name for this is "A Box Of Blessings" and was written by Kathy Collard Miller. It is featured in Lettie Kirkpatrick Burress's book;  "Taking Back Christmas and Other Family Celebrations".
Her book is there for $10 and is a great investment for every mother seeking to keep Christ at the center of her home. (This is not an affiliate link but I do have Mrs. Burress's permission.)

I had the privilege of meeting Mrs. Burress years ago at a women's workshop, Keeping Holidays, Holy Days. The ticket was a very precious gift to me from a lady that helped shape my Christian "mothering", Mrs. Pat. There are some things that you don't get over, I didn't get over the gift the Lord sent me in Mrs. Pat and I didn't get over the things I learned from Mrs. Burress's conference.
Funny, I only had 2 little boys then, but now 6 kids have been so shaped by what I learned. This box, worn and tattered as it is, gets brought out for every Christmas and is so cherished by all of my kids. (But they are asking me to make a new one ;-) But as you can see, I put this together as frugally as possible. You can even use prints of these objects instead of the real thing if you don't have them handy. You can also add verses and more to your daily 'present'.
I pray that you all would find the Blessing in this Box of Blessings!
The following are the instructions as I have them from years ago, as best I can still read them. The first day of December, we get the box out and it goes from there.

"Present #1 A large wrapped box containing 24 gift-wrapped presents. READ: We are going to be opening little presents for 24 more days. God gave us the most precious gift of all, His Son Jesus. (John 3:16) Have each of us received this gift of Jesus into our lives?
Present #2 Several pieces of any kind of food.  READ: Does food always stay the same even after a long time? No, it changes when it gets old, doesn't it? But Jesus never changes; He is always the same. (Hebrews 13:8) Why do you think it is important that Jesus never changes?
Present #3 A heart shaped object. Hearts remind us of love. We love others, but did you know that God loves us even more? (1Corinthians 13:4-7) How many things about love can we find in these verses?
Present #4 A piece of soap. READ: Jesus washed His disciples' feet to show them that they should be servants to each other. (John 13:5) How can we be a servant to each other?
Present #5 A piece of flat bread for each person. (Matzo works!) READ: Jesus was tempted just like we are. (Matthew 4:1-11) When we are tempted, how can we resist the Tempter like Jesus did?
Present #6 A small candle or flashlight. (I use a tiny b-day candle.) READ: Both a candle and a flashlight give light. (Matthew 5:16) How can we be a light so that other people can see Jesus in us?
Present #7 A little Bible or tiny Scripture booklet. READ: God gives us His words in the Bible (2 Timothy 3:16) How does the Bible help us to live the Christian life?
Present #8 A piece of modeling clay. READ: We can mold this piece of clay into whatever we want it to be. Sometimes we want to be like the people of the world but Jesus wants to mold us into His image. (Romans 12:12) Are there some things we do that are like the world and not like Jesus?
Present #9 Scissors. READ: With scissors, we can cut out crowns for us to wear. (Have construction paper available for crowns.) Jesus promises to give heavenly crowns to those who still love Him even when sad things happen to them. (James 1:12) What sad thing has happened in each of our lives? Do we still love Jesus?
Present #10 A toy boat. READ: The disciples were afraid they would die in a storm. (Mark 4:35-40) Are we afraid of something? What does God say about fear?
Present #11 A small battery. READ: A battery gives a flashlight the power to produce light. Similarly, the Holy Spirit gives us the power to live a Christian life and have the fruit of the Spirit. (Galatians 5:22,23) What are the fruits of the Spirit? How can we have the fruits of the Spirit?
Present #12 A penny for each person. READ: God fave us everything we need and wants us to give a part of it back to Him. (2 Corinthians 9:7) What can each of us give to God? Does God want us to be happy or sad when we give to Him?
Present #13 A plastic lid. READ: We usa a lid or seal to keep something inside a jar or other container. (Ephesians 1:13) Who does God use to seal our salvation within us?
Present #14 A rubber band. READ: See this rubber band? When we pull and stretch it, it becomes tight. That's a good example of how we feel inside when we worry. If we don't stretch it, the rubber band is soft and relaxed. (Philippians 4:6-7) God wants us to relax in Him. If we are uptight, what do we need to so so that we can relax inside?
Present #16 A blank piece of paper with "sin" erased off. READ: When you make a mistake in writing, you can erase it and start over again. When you do something wrong, called sin, you can ask Jesus to forgive you and He will forget all about it. You can start over again. (Ephesians 4:32) What is something each of us did wrong lately that Jesus has forgiven us for?
Present #17 Empty. READ: Were you surprised to find this present empty? So was Peter when he found the tomb of Jesus empty. (John 20 1 9) Jesus was born so that He could grow into manhood and die for our sins and then be resurrected from the dead. What does resurrected mean? Jesus is alive- how does that affect our lives as Christians?
Present #18 A cotton ball with perfume on it. READ: This smells good, doesn't it? What Jesus did for us, by dying for our sins, smelled good to God. (Ephesians 5:2) What nice thing have each of us done lately that smells good to God?
Present #19 A plastic or toy angel. READ: An angel will announce when Jesus comes back to earth to take His children to heaven. (1 Thessalonians 4:16) Do each of us know that we are going to heaven? How can we know for sure?
Present #20 A match. READ: The deeds we do are either valuable or worthless. (1Corinthians 3:12, 13) What deeds are each of us doing that will be considered good in heaven? What deeds will be judged worthless and burned up?
Present #21 A picture of a neighbor or friend. READ: God uses the word "neighbor" to mean everyone. (Galations 5:14) He wants us to love everyone. Do we have a hard time loving everyone?
Present #22 A happy face sticker. READ: Is there something you can do to make God happy? (Colossians 3:20) What are some ways each of us can be obedient today?
Present #23 A tiny piece of concrete. (I have a piece of hardened play-doh.) READ: The foundation of a house is usually made from concrete. It is put in first before the house is built. (Luke 6:47-49) Is Jesus our foundation? Is He first in each of our lives?
Present #24 A tiny globe or picture of the earth. READ: God made the earth and everything in it. That includes each of us. (Genesis 1:1 Psalm24:1?)
Present #25 A photograph of each child when they were a baby.  READ: You used to be a baby, didn't you? So was Jesus. Just as you are growing up, Jesus grew up so that He could one day become our Savior. (Luke 2:1-20) What do you want to be when you grow up? In what way can each of us continue to have the Christmas spirit every day of the year?"
